My aim is to help you with whatever emotional and psychological difficulties you may be experiencing in your life and to provide the opportunity to explore aspects of yourself in a non-judgemental and supportive environment, secure in the knowledge that the process is entirely confidential. The fundamental worth of a human being and our right to be seen, heard and understood is what motivates me in this work
Listening to your difficulties often involves my helping you to reach a better understanding of who you are and how you relate to others. In helping you to identify negative patterns of relationship and behaviour which you now may be feeling ready to explore, you may learn more effective ways to tackle problems and solve difficult situations. Ultimately, this means you may develop skills and tools such as different ways of thinking, more effective coping mechanisms, and improved problem-solving. .
I do not offer advice, or tell you what to do, or what not to do. Instead, together we try to understand the difficulties as you describe them and make sense of their meaning for you. I offer a holistic integrative approach with a transpersonal perspective and am informed by many different theories and theoretical approaches(Jungian, Gestalt, Transactional Analysis, Attachment, Psychoanalytic, Cognitive Behavioural). These can be applied in response to your needs, whilst believing that no single theoretical framework or model of psyche can possibly fit everyone.
“Learn your theories as well as you can but put them aside when you touch the miracle of the living soul”. Jung (1928)
How I work
After an initial conversation on the telephone, I offer prospective clients a consultation appointment. The purpose of this is to give us an opportunity to begin talking about what is troubling you.
If we do agree to continue, practical details such as the regular day and time for your session will be discussed. Sessions last for 50 minutes. Having a set time and regular day for sessions is very important to give a sense of continuity to the process of the therapy. For most people too, having a regular time gives a sense of security to the experience.
I work within strict guidelines for the profession, have regular supervision, and undertake regular professional development. I have professional indemnity insurance.
The Arts in Therapy.
Many of us will have found that words alone are not always enough to describe, and communicate how we feel and that an image, poem, story or song can say it more accurately. Working with the arts connects us to our imagination and gives us another language to express and process our experience.
Acting as a facilitator I may free you to safely engage in creativity(drawing, poetry, music, writing, drama, dance and movement, body work, sandplay, puppetry). This can assist the search for meaning and empower you to develop the strength to take charge of your own life, utilizing the resources and answers within yourself.
There will be the opportunity to work with different arts modalities in therapy but no pressure to do so.
"Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms—to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way". (Viktor E Frankl)
